What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)?

The Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) policy, effective on April 1, 2019, replaces the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme. This policy requires large companies to report energy consumption and related carbon emissions in the Director’s Report or an equivalent energy and carbon report for LLPs.

The requirement to report applies to all large undertakings if either categorised as a UK Quoted Company or an Unquoted Company or LLP meeting a minimum of two of the following three criteria: having more than 250 employees, an annual turnover exceeding £36 million, or a balance sheet totalling more than £18 million.

Benefits of SECR

Cost savings and efficiency boost

Enhanced reputation and stakeholder confidence

Regulatory compliance and risk mitigation

Competitive advantage and market differentiation

Long-term sustainability and resilience

What will happen if I fail to comply?

The Conduct Committee has the authority to apply to the courts for an order requiring directors to prepare a revised report/set of accounts where the reporting requirements fail to meet the SECR requirements. Late filing penalties will be applied by Companies House and submissions will be rejected, where the requirements have not been met.
