Abri

Delivering a successful carbon reporting strategy with accuracy, visibility, and efficiency.

Abri
challenge-2

The Challenge

Across the UK, organisations are faced with the challenge of formulating and delivering a successful carbon reporting strategy. With every business having different considerations on their net-zero journey, support must be tailored to the organisation’s needs to best help them achieve their objectives.

We understand the pressures and demands involved. While the 2050 date may seem far away, legislative changes are becoming ever more frequent, urging organisations to move down the net-zero path more efficiently.

Abri came to us for help with:

  • Formulating and delivering a successful carbon reporting strategy.
  • Accurate reporting of Scope 3 emissions.

The company was already capturing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and some Scope 3 emissions, as part of its SECR (Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting) requirements. However, it needed to build on this already substantial data to develop a much more robust carbon reporting strategy to accelerate its net-zero and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) ambitions.

Abri’s challenges with carbon reporting were no different to many organisations, although some aspects of the business involved extra layers of complexity. The Scope 3 items that were particularly challenging were:

  • Purchased goods and services.
  • Capital goods (new build houses).
  • Waste.
  • Commuting.
  • Downstream leased assets.

The Solution

We facilitated a series of workshops with relevant stakeholders at Abri, providing a gap analysis of each of the 15 GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories. We reviewed each definition and minimum boundary, determining and prioritising a list of Scope 3 categories that Abri chose to report on moving forward. This list was created using quantitative analysis, based on:

  • Relevancy
  • Impact
  • Accessibility of data

Together, we formulated a calculation methodology and process, which included timescales and milestones, to capture Abri’s data.

As levels of knowledge and resources vary within organisations, we understand the importance of flexibility, tailoring our level of support to match client need. In some cases clients are able to do many of the calculations in the data collection and reporting process themselves. With Abri, we agreed on a hybrid support package, assisting with the calculation methodology and with some of the calculations, which are based on the methodology advised in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Technical Guidance. We reviewed the 182-page document and provided simple analysis and summary explanations to assist in the reporting and calculation process.

We’ve also offered support in capturing some of the data required for the calculations, which come from various sources including gas, electricity and water invoices.

In order for Abri to have clear visibility of its carbon emissions, we processed the data through our bespoke carbon management system, Pulse. This pulls energy, transport and financial data into one, easy-to-access place, with a sophisticated carbon reporting dashboard that provided Abri with detailed analysis of its emissions.

The Benefits

Using the Pulse platform, Abri has a clear picture of its emissions. Reporting is now much more efficient, enabling the company to quickly identify areas of action to deliver on its carbon reduction plan, as well as freeing up more time to focus on wider ESG objectives.

Working with Trident has been invaluable when navigating the complexities of carbon accounting. They’ve facilitated thought-provoking workshops which have enabled us to clearly define our carbon reduction pathway, and have supported and guided us to do this in a science-based, methodical and co-ordinated way. Trident have been a true partner throughout the process, making this a genuinely collaborative experience tailored to the requirements and aspirations of Abri.”
