What is the UK CBAM?

The UK CBAM is a new environmental tax designed to ensure that highly traded, carbon-intensive products imported into the UK face a comparable carbon price to those produced domestically. It aims to prevent 'carbon leakage', where emissions are simply moved to countries with weaker climate regulations.

From 2027, importers of specific goods will be required to report the embedded emissions of their imports and pay a levy based on the UK carbon price.

The UK CBAM will initially apply to imports of the following carbon-intensive commodities:

Aluminium
Cement
Ceramics
Fertilisers
Glass
Hydrogen
Iron and steel
