Success Story
River Island
How a long-standing partnership has simplified energy management across one of the UK's best-known retail estates.
More than two decades of change
For more than 25 years, Trident has worked with River Island, supporting one of the UK's best-known fashion retailers as the demands of managing energy across a large retail estate have become increasingly complex.
Twenty-five years is a long time in retail. Fashions have changed, shopping habits have moved online and the high street has weathered one challenge after another. Behind the scenes, large retail estates rarely stand still. Stores open, close and relocate. Landlords change, reporting requirements increase and new priorities emerge across the business. Through it all, River Island has continued working with the same team, building a relationship that has provided consistency through more than two decades of change.
A relationship that has adapted over time
When River Island first started working with Trident, the brief was relatively straightforward. Energy Procurement was the priority, securing competitive contracts across a growing estate. As the business grew, reporting requirements increased, sustainability became part of everyday operations rather than a separate initiative, store refurbishments brought different energy demands, landlords introduced additional complexity and understanding how sites were performing became just as important as negotiating the next contract. Rather than looking for a different provider every time a new requirement emerged, River Island continued building on an existing relationship.
Today, Trident supports the business across Energy Procurement, Invoice Validation, energy monitoring, Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), Energy Action Plans and renewable subsidy management. Each service was introduced to meet a need as the business grew, building on a relationship that was already in place. Over time, that continuity has meant working with people who understand how the estate operates, why previous decisions were made and how new projects fit into the wider picture. Whether it's supporting a refurbishment programme, providing data for compliance reporting or investigating an issue at a particular site, River Island doesn't need to start from scratch each time.
"One of the biggest benefits of working together over a long period of time is the understanding that comes with it. We know the estate, we know the history behind previous decisions and we know the people we're supporting. That makes it much easier to respond when something new comes along."
Liam Salisbury, Account Manager, Trident
Supporting better decisions
For a business operating hundreds of locations, small improvements can make a significant difference. For River Island, that starts with making sure the fundamentals are right. By validating supplier and landlord invoices, Trident helps ensure the business only pays for the energy it has used and that charges remain accurate. Alongside this, bespoke monitoring and targeting reports provide a clearer picture of energy performance across the estate. By comparing similar stores and highlighting unusual patterns of consumption, the reports help identify opportunities to investigate wasted energy, understand how sites are performing and focus attention where it's likely to have the greatest impact.
Bringing procurement, invoice validation, monitoring and reporting together also means information is easier to find, easier to understand and easier to use. Rather than pulling together data from different sources, finance, property and sustainability teams have the information they need to support day-to-day decisions and longer-term planning.
Looking ahead
Retail will continue to change, just as it has over the past 25 years. New reporting requirements will emerge, technology will develop and businesses will continue looking for smarter ways to manage their estates. As those priorities shift, the relationship between River Island and Trident will continue to adapt alongside them. What began with Energy Procurement now supports reporting, compliance, operational decision-making and the day-to-day management of a complex retail estate. More than two decades on, the value lies not just in the range of services provided, but in working with people who already understand the estate, the context behind decisions and how the business operates.
Trident have consistently provided an excellent service for over 20 years adapting to meet our needs. Apart from the quality of the advice, we have particularly valued that the relationship hasn't stood still. As our business has changed, the support has changed with it.
