Konica Minolta Business Solutions

Delivering complete visibility of energy use and carbon emissions, plus enhanced compliance reporting.

Konica Minolta Business Solutions
challenge-2

The Challenge

Konica Minolta Business Solutions (KMBS) regularly reports to its global headquarters on energy use and steps taken to mitigate the environmental impact of its UK operation. This includes reporting utility use at all its operational locations.

To enhance this reporting, KMBS asked us to develop a carbon report that would identify aspects of the business contributing to environmental impact, while measuring both the amount of energy used and the resulting CO2 emissions.

This involved:

  • Collating data from new sources.
  • Meeting the requirements of the reporting guidance.
  • Completing the report ahead of corporate governance deadlines.

The Solution

Clear ongoing communication was essential to complete the project within the agreed timeframe. We worked closely with KMBS as a true partnership, providing regular data progress updates and delivering a draft report well ahead of the deadline.

While we were developing the report, the UK government issued its guidance on Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR). As KMBS met the mandatory threshold of this compliance initiative, the decision was taken to align the report with the guidelines.

We gathered data on electricity and natural gas consumption at each operational KMBS property, together with information on refrigerant gas usage and transport activities. Collating this information and using appropriate conversion factors, we calculated KMBS’s total energy use and carbon emissions from business activities. An intensity metric was then produced using a factor relevant to business activity.

We delivered two versions of the report: one for internal use, which includes background information on the data collection process and guidance on the regulations, and a second which is compatible with the format suggested in the SECR guidance, in a layout aligned to the format of KMBS’s financial statement. Following a review by KMBS’s stakeholders, the report was issued within the timeframe set out for production of the business’s financial statement.

The Benefits

KMBS now benefits from a clear layout of its energy use and carbon emissions and has an intensity metric relevant to its business activity.

Compliance reporting is delivered in a format compatible with its existing corporate statements, and acts as an indicator to help drive business energy use improvements.
